2nd Athens International Elbow Course

"N. Louros" Conference Center MITERA Hospital

The 2nd International Elbow Seminar was held at the N. Louros Conference Center, MITERA Hospital, on November 10-12, 2017. The Workshops on fracture osteosynthesis using models took place in the HYGEIA Hospital auditorium. Hands-on cadaver practice was performed on Sunday November 12, 2017 at the facilities of the Hellenic Association of Orthopedic Surgery & Traumatology.

The Seminar was jointly organized by the HYGEIA Hospital 2nd Orthopedic Clinic and the Athens University 1st Orthopedic Clinic, under the auspices of the Hellenic Association of Orthopedic Surgery & Traumatology and the College of Greek Orthopedic Surgeons.

The speakers included Professor Christopher Tuohy and Anastasios Papadonikolakis from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, North Carolina, USA, and Professor Charalambos Zalavras, from the University of South California, Los Angeles, USA.

The Seminar focused on the development of modern techniques for treating traumatic injuries of the elbow, as well as restoring chronic elbow conditions. It was concluded that the development of new osteosynthesis materials in the last three years has contributed significantly in managing very complex traumatic elbow injuries.

It was also noted that stable osteosynthesis and immediate mobilization of complex elbow fractures and dislocations were of paramount importance. This view prevails lately, as it leads to avoiding the major issue of postoperative stiffness for these types of injuries.

Professor Tuhoy also elaborated on the results following total elbow arthroplasty. This is quite an innovative procedure internationally, while very few Greek doctors have the necessary experience to perform it.
