IPEX ATHENS (International Pelvic Exenteration Centre) is the specialised Centre for Advanced Pelvic Oncology & Pelvic Exenteration of HYGEIA. It was established to assess and treat patients with complex and advanced pelvic malignancies through a comprehensive programme that combines specialised surgery, multidisciplinary collaboration, advanced technology and personalised care.
The Centre provides care for patients with locally advanced or recurrent rectal cancer, advanced gynaecological or urological cancers, as well as patients with complex or rare pelvic tumours requiring specialised multidisciplinary management. It also provides patients with the opportunity to seek a specialist second medical opinion regarding their treatment.
Pelvic exenteration is one of the most complex procedures in modern oncological surgery. It is performed in selected patients when it can offer the best therapeutic option, based on the individual assessment of the medical team.
No. Each patient is individually assessed by the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) to determine whether this particular treatment approach is the most appropriate.
The Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) comprises specialists from different medical disciplines who jointly assess each case. This ensures that each patient receives a comprehensive and personalised treatment recommendation in accordance with international standards.
The team includes colorectal surgeons, urologists, gynaecologists, oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, anaesthetists and specialised rehabilitation professionals:
- Plastic surgeons
- Vascular surgeons
- Orthopaedic surgeons
- Intensive care physicians
- Specialised nurses
- Physiotherapists
- Psychologists
- Nutritionists
Treatment is planned following a review of the patient’s medical history and imaging studies, discussion by the Multidisciplinary Team, and application of international clinical guidelines. The approach takes into account not only the characteristics of the disease, but also the patient’s overall health, quality of life and individual needs.
The information usually required includes the patient’s medical history, pathology reports, pelvic MRI, CT and/or PET-CT scans, details of previous treatments and surgical reports, where available.
The goal is optimal oncological management and safe surgical treatment that offers the greatest possible likelihood of disease control or cure, where feasible, while maintaining the best possible quality of life.
The IPEX ATHENS team provides structured follow-up, rehabilitation and ongoing support, with the aim of facilitating functional recovery and providing long-term care.
IPEX ATHENS was established specifically to provide patients in Greece with access to specialised, high-quality care in accordance with international standards. Many complex cases can now be assessed and treated in Greece by a specialised team.
