4. ESCRS Refractive Surgery Diploma
   • Since 1998 I have been actively involved in the new institution of ESCRS Refractive Surgery Diploma. I am member of the ESCRS Refractive Committee and part of the 4-member organizing committee of the Course for the year 1999. Also, I took part in organizing Module I (ie. Teaching part) in Nice, in 1988 and Vienna in 1999, as well as Modules II and ΙΙΙ which took place in University of Crete. It is worth mentioning that the Ophthalmology Clinic of the University of Crete is one of the twelve centers in Europe selected from ΕSCRS further training in refractive surgery. I also took over the process of the candidates’ written exams.
5. To the Nursing staff of General University Hospital of Heraklion (on a 2year basis, 1 hour per subject)

   1. Under the student exchange program, I was responsible for the education of foreign students during their training at the Ophthalmology clinic. Also, following my actions, three 5th year medical students of University of Crete were hosted for one month at the Harvard University of Boston, USA.
   2. Also, I was responsible for the sabbatical of ophthalmologists coming to the Ophthalmology Clinic of University of Crete with grant from ESCRS (European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons).
7. Official trainer for companies
   I was an official trainer for STAAR company (cataract intraocular lenses and refractive ICL intraocular lenses), Refractive Technologies and IOLTECH companies (LASIK microkeratomes, FlapMaker), as well as Oertli company (cataract phacoemulsification machine), in Europe and the Middle East.

I.  LASIK, Laser in Situ Keratomileusis (Clinical & Basic)

LASIK, or Laser in Situ Keratomileusis is a method for the correction of refractive errors that was developed in the University of Crete and the Vardinoyannion Eye Institute of Crete. I was involved from the very first steps of its development. LASIK is now considered as the method of choice in the correction of most refractive errors. It was the subject of my Ph.D. thesis. Four publications resulted from my thesis, two of them in the Archives of Ophthalmology journal.  In 1998 I co-edited the book «LASIK»

II. FDA protocols (Clinical research)

I was an investigator for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of USA study for the Autonomous Technologies Corporation (ATC), a company developing a new generation of excimer laser to be used in the correction of refractive errors. In November 1998, the company received the FDA approval for clinical use. The protocols in which I was involved were the following:

• II. Low myopia (0 to -6 Diopters),
• II. Low myopia/astigmatism protocol: Myopia up to -6 D and astigmatism up to -3 D.
• II. Moderate myopia with LASIK.

• Basic studies were published in 1995

IV. Photo-therapeutic keratectomy (clinical)

1. Astigmatic arcuate cuts for the treatment of astigmatism (Clinical)

Development of a software for indicating the number and placement of arcuate cuts needed to correct astigmatism based on computerized corneal topography. Results were published in 1995 (J Refract Surg 1996 Feb;12(2):S296-9).

VI.  Hyperopia – Presbyopia (Clinical)

I suggested the treatment of high hyperopia using clear lensectomy and Intraocular lens implantation that resulted in the publication of three papers.  This is internationally accepted today and the operation is performed all over the world.

VII.  Study of Haze after PRK (Clinical)

• ICL, Implantable Contact lenses (Clinical)

This clinical research is going on since 1996. It has to do with the evaluation of STAAR Implantable Contact lenses in the correction of myopia and hyperopia. Results will be published in the near future.

IX.   Photo-Ablative lenticular modulator (PALM)

A new method for the correction of corneal irregularities. Abstracts were published in ARVO.

X. Corneal burns (basic)

A basic research in cooperation with the Hadassah University Hospital, Hebrew University, Israel. Results were published in the Cornea journal. 1998 Mar;17(2):191-5. Vision quality (Clinical)

Ferrara intracorneal rings for the treatment of keratoconus (Clinical)
