HYGEIA: Master-C.LA.S.S 2019

19 June 2019

On July 5 – 6 2019, the 6th Department of Surgery – HYGEIA Hospital will be hosting the 2019 Master-C.LA.S.S. on Colorectal Surgery, at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens.

The 2019 Master-C.LA.S.S. is part of the postgraduate C.LA.S.S. Courses (Colorectal Laparoscopic Surgical Skills) which were created in 2008 and are directed by Dr. Constantinos Mavrantonis M.D., the medical staff of the Department and a large faculty of specialized doctors. These courses cover the full spectrum of colorectal surgery and consist of 4 postgraduate 2-day clinical workshops (Chapters) throughout the year. The C.LA.S.S. Courses include Interactive Discussion groups, Interactive Live Surgery observation, Hands-On Surgery on animal and Fresh Frozen Cadaveric training models and definition of Surgical Algorithms through Interactive Case Presentation sessions. Trainees acquire further practical skills through a 4 to 7-hour personal training program on virtual-reality LapMentor Simulators at the NoDE Institute’s Simulation Center. The Center also provides training for Basic Life Support and has designed and developed its own Pelvic Trainers. Moreover, in order to ensure competence and safety in laparoscopic colectomy, a Proctorship program is available for surgeons to perform their first cases under guidance.

Once a year, an internationally acclaimed colorectal surgeon is invited from Europe or the United States as Visiting Professor, to provide trainees with the unique opportunity to directly interact with top surgeons in the field of colorectal surgery.

This year, Professor Steven Wexner,  University of South Florida, Cleveland Clinic Florida, and Mariana Berho, Chair of Pathology and Laboratory, Cleveland Clinic Florida, will cohost the 2019 Master-C.LA.S.S. They will present exciting topics including everything surgeons need to know on rectal cancer, discussions on emotional intelligence and leadership, educational guidance techniques, laparoscopic and robotic simulation workshops, and live TaTME surgery, the groundbreaking surgical technique for the treatment of rectal cancer .

The C.LA.S.S. Courses are part of the multiple training activities of the NoDE Institute (Network of Doctor’s Education), a non-profit organization devoted to providing healthcare professionals with easy access to specialized postgraduate education, tutoring and proctorship, in order to enhance patient care.
