6th Surgical Department

The 6th Surgical Department covers the full range of cutting edge – mostly laparoscopic- general surgery (i.e. treatment of surgical diseases and tumors of the abdomen, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, splenectomy, bowel obstruction, adrenalectomy, gastrectomy, hernia repair).

The department primarily specializes in colorectal surgery for benign and malignant disease, such as:

  • Colon cancer
  • Colon polyps
  • Diverticulitis
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Familial adenomatous polyposis
  • Rectal prolapse
  • Anal abscess / fistula
  • Rectovaginal fistula
  • Anal fissure
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Anal warts
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Anal stenosis
  • Colon surgery (right and left colectomy, total colectomy & J-pouch) is performed laparoscopically.

Surgical diseases of the rectum:

The rectum is removed laparoscopically, applying all oncologic principles. Applying revolutionary operations such as laparoscopic intersphincteric rectal resection for ultralow rectal tumors, colostomies are avoided in most cases.
Complex fistulae and abscesses are investigated by endoanal ultrasound and treated with minimal injury to the anal sphincters.

The department’s educational activities include training of surgeons in laparoscopic colorectal surgery by means of seminars (www.lapcolectomy.org) organized since 2008, under the auspices of, and in cooperation with the European Surgical Institute (ESI) – Hamburg, Germany.

The department maintains scientific relations with the Cleveland Clinic Florida, department of Colorectal Surgery.
