HYGEIA provides fully equipped Intensive Care Units holding 26 beds.

In addition to the diagnostic and support methods common to all ICU, such as respiratory support (with invasive and non-invasive methods) and hemodynamic measurements with right heart catheterization, the HYGEIA ICU also apply more specialized procedures, such as:

  • Intra – aortic balloon pump – (IABP)
  • Methods of continuous hemofiltration and hemodialysis
  • Continuous measurements of intracraneal pressure

Furthermore, there is continuous support from laboratories for X-rays, Ultrasound, a Haemodynamic laboratory, CT & MRI scanner as well as doctors of all medical specialties.

The ICU admits patients with serious diseases of all specialties, medical, surgical, pulmonary, cardiologic, neurologic and all medical and surgical subspecialties. These patients require monitoring and support of their vital functions. In addition to this, the admission criteria include:

  • Patients who have undergone surgery with an increased probability of post – operative problems, but are in a stable condition (lobectomy, carotid surgery, elderly patients).
  • Patients who are in need of frequent specialized care of the respiratory system, with suctions, physiotherapy (patients with chronic respiratory problems in exacerbation, cerebrovascular accidents where the patient is not able to cooperate as far as respiration is concerned etc)
  • Cardiac cases in a stable condition, but with a high probability of problems (probable arrhythmia)
  • Patients, who, after being treated in the Intensive Care Unit, need a transition period with increased care, especially regarding the respiratory system (e.g. tracheotomy).
  • Any other patient whose stay at a regular ward is considered to be precarious and who requires close attention.
  • Caring for patients in bed
  • Nursing care and monitoring of cardiac surgery patients (CABG, valve replacement, etc)
  • Nursing case and monitoring of pathology and surgery patients
  • Nursing care and monitoring of neurosurgery patients
  • Medication administration
  • Monitoring of vital signs and ECG
  • Administration of inotropic medications, vasospastic medications, vasodilators and sedatives, which require monitoring
  • Intubation
  • Mechanical ventilation
  • Non-invasive ventilation
  • Synchronized cardioversion
  • Intra-aortic pump placement
  • Tracheotomy
  • Extrarenal cleansing
  • Billau catheter insertion
  • Enteral nutrition using jejunal or nasojejunal catheter
  • Blood gas collection and immediate analysis
  • ACT measurement, central venous catheter insertion, arterial catheter insertion for BP monitoring, thrombolysis, re-setting
