The New Era of HYGEIA – MITERA: The transformation of the largest hospital complex in the country
08 July 2025
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the operation of HYGEIA Hospital, an event was held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the “N. LOUROS” Conference Centre of MITERA Hospital, entitled: “The New Era of HYGEIA – MITERA”.
During the event, the new architectural identity of HYGEIA and MITERA was presented, marking its transition to a new era of development and regeneration focused on people, sustainability and the progress of medical science.
This is a comprehensive project, implemented by the HHG Group (Hellenic Healthcare Group) and concerning the transformation of HYGEIA and MITERA Hospitals into a single, state-of-the-art healthcare complex – the largest in the country, – with more than 800 beds. At the same time, the creation of a theme park of Medical History, dedicated to the development of medicine in Greece, with Hippocrates as a reference point, is planned.
The project includes:
- Renovation of the facades of the two hospitals and their functional integration based on the principles of sustainable and energy-efficient architecture.
- Design of the outdoor spaces as a green park, open to external visitors, with a therapeutic and educational character.
The project places particular emphasis on sustainability, with energy-saving systems such as the “double-skin façade”, natural materials and extensive photovoltaic modules, making the complex a model of sustainable hospital design.
A central element of the new design and unification of the two hospital complexes is the “Hippocrates Walk”, a single garden of 12,500 sq. m, incorporating more than 200 species of aromatic and medicinal plants. This space will function as a therapeutic and educational park, offering walking trails, view and relaxation spots, as well as educational and rest stations, enhancing the physical and mental well-being of patients, visitors and employees. By connecting the hospital with the natural landscape and the urban fabric, the complex acquires a new character.
Mr. Andreas Kartapanis, President and CEO of HYGEIA, stated: “Today we are inaugurating a new chapter in the journey of HYGEIA and MITERA, creating a model medical environment, functional and welcoming, designed to integrate artificial intelligence and digital technology into its services. It will invest in personalized medicine, prevention, sustainability and digital health, – a space of care where the future of medicine meets respect for people and the environment.”
Mr. Dimitris Spyridis, CEO of the HHG Group, underlined: “The Hellenic Healthcare Group is strategically investing in the upgrading of the infrastructure of all the Group’s hospitals, consistently supporting quality and innovation in healthcare. HYGEIA and MITERA are entering a new era that honours their history and at the same time paves the way to the future.”
HYGEIA began its operations in May 1975, while MITERA in April 1979. Both hospitals were built on a 25,000 sq m plot, making the area one of the most important healthcare hubs in Athens.
With a view to the future, HYGEIA and MITERA are radically upgrading their infrastructures, reshaping these historic buildings into a single, modern and sustainable healthcare complex, which reflects its identity and confirms position at the forefront of healthcare.
The study for the redesign and upgrade of the HYGEIA-MITERA complex was undertaken by the architectural firm Tsoukalas Architects, headquartered in Athens and active internationally.
