Participation of Prof Maria Stamelou, Head of Parkinson’s disease and Movement Disorders Department of HYGEIA in an international publication of the book “Parkinson’s Disease: International Review of Neurobiology”

Parkinson’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease. It accounts for about 1% of the population over 65, but it can also occur at younger ages. It is also a disease that occurs with progressively worsening motor and non-motor symptoms. The disease was first described 200 years ago. Its description by James Parkinson in 1817 was quite accurate, but research these two centuries has changed a lot in the way we perceive the disease.

This book discusses all developments on Parkinson’s disease, from its description to date. Specifically, it discusses our knowledge on the etiology, pathophysiology and neurobiology of the disease, as well as its treatment, today, in the immediate and distant future.

The book is written in English.
