3rd Gastroenterology Department

The 3rd Gastroenterology Department cares for patients with a wide range of digestive tract diseases. The Department is directed by Dr. Ilias Scotiniotis, a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association. The team of the 3rd Gastroenterology Department works closely with specialists in the fields of surgery and oncology, providing multidisciplinary care for complex digestive tract problems.

As part of its daily practice, the Department examines patients with irritable bowel syndrome, functional constipation, idiopathic inflammatory diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease), gastroesophageal reflux disease, functional dyspepsia and peptic ulcer. The Department offers 24-hour medical cover for emergency cases.

At the same time, the Department engages in interventional endoscopy methods. These techniques particularly concern oncological conditions of the digestive tract, such as pancreatic or biliary cancer, colon, rectal, stomach and oesophageal cancer. The Department also applies advanced endoscopic techniques to benign conditions, such as sub-mucosal tumours, pancreatic cysts, choledocholithiasis and pancreatitis. Expertise in advanced techniques stems from specialised training in major endoscopy centres in the USA (Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Brigham & Women’s Hospital) and Germany (Universitaetsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf). The Department has active participation in these areas, with presentations in training sessions and conferences in Greece and abroad.

The endoscopic procedures performed by the 3rd Gastroenterology Department under two categories:

  1. Routine endoscopic procedures:
    • Gastroscopy
    • Colonoscopy – rectosigmoidoscopy
    • Polypectomy
    • Capsule endoscopy
  2. Interventional endoscopic methods:
    • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) with biopsy (EUS–FNA)
    • ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography)
    • Cholangioscopy
    • Insertion of stents
    • Insertion of gastrostomy
    • Drainage of pancreatic fluid collections and pseudocysts
    • Endoscopic management of Barrett’s oesophagus with dysplasia

All the endoscopic procedures are performed under anaesthesia and are completely painless.
