2nd Scientific Meeting Zebras and Unicorns in cytology Interesting cases

"N. Louros" Conference Center MITERA Hospital

The 2nd Meeting of the HYGEIA-MITERA Cytology Lab was organized on March 11, 2017.

The Cytology Lab staff, however, did not come up with the imaginative meeting title. It was thought up by Andrew Renshaw from Baptist Hospital Miami, Florida, author of Aspiration Cytology: A Pattern Recognition Approach. In it, he classified lesions as horses, zebras and unicorns. Horses are common; zebras are not so common, so it is best to be aware of their differential diagnosis; and unicorns exist only in case reports, so it is unlikely they will be encountered during the professional life of a clinical lab physician.

The meeting focused on the diagnostic conundrum of the Cytology Lab physicians when it comes to zebras and unicorns, hoping to get cytologists, anatomical pathologists and other related clinicians involved.

Various gynecological, breast, thyroid, lung, liver, pancreas, kidney, prostate and CSF fluid cases were presented. Furthermore, the Lab Director, Ms Charitini Salla, gave a lecture on “The Bethesda System for the Thyroid – Updates/Latest Developments”.

The speakers sparked the interest of the audience, who requested for similar initiatives to be repeated in the future.
