6 Steps to Prevent Infections
The hospital is a place of care; however, during your stay, there is a possibility of exposure to microorganisms that can cause infection. By following simple protective measures, you can significantly reduce your risk of infection.
Wash your hands frequently
- Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
- Especially before eating, after using the restroom, and after touching hospital surfaces or equipment
- If your hands are visibly dirty, wash them with soap and water
Ask everyone to practice hand hygiene
- Don’t hesitate to remind staff to practice hand hygiene before and after every interaction with you
- Ask visitors and companions to do the same
Protect yourself when you are sick
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
- Use a tissue or your elbow
- Ask the staff if you need to wear a mask
- Companions/visitors with symptoms of a respiratory infection are not permitted in the hospital.
Protect your surroundings
- Do not sit on other patients’ beds, and do not allow visitors to sit on yours
- Visitors must practice hand hygiene when entering and leaving the room
Follow isolation guidelines (if necessary)
- In the event of isolation, staff will inform you of the necessary measures
- Staff and visitors may be required to wear masks or protective equipment
- Do not leave the room without consulting the staff
Notify the staff of any changes
- If you notice that a bandage, catheter, or IV line has shifted or become wet, notify the nurses immediately
- If you notice redness, pain, or swelling at the insertion site of a catheter, IV line, or drainage tube, notify the nurses immediately.
