Antibiotics and Proper Use
Antibiotics are medications used to treat or prevent infections. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics when you have an infection or when prevention is needed, such as after surgery or in cases of a weakened immune system.
Before prescribing an antibiotic, the doctor assesses:
- the type of infection
- the microorganism responsible (when known)
- kidney and liver function
- other medications you are taking
- any allergies
- possible side effects
Remember:
- Take your antibiotics exactly as prescribed.
- Do not stop treatment without medical advice, even if you feel better.
- Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections (such as the common cold or the flu).
- Inappropriate use of antibiotics can lead to the development of resistant bacteria.
Notify the staff immediately if you experience:
- a rash or allergic reaction
- severe diarrhea
- shortness of breath or swelling
- any symptom that concerns you
The proper use of antibiotics is important for your effective treatment and for the protection of public health.
