1,000 Robot-Assisted Urologic Procedures Successfully Performed So Far

23 April 2019

Taking responsibility for life, HYGEIA is at the cutting edge of medical science, strategically investing in advanced technology. In this light, it invests heavily in robotic surgery, this time with the state-of-the-art da Vinci Xi robotic system, used to perform innovative procedures, including those to treat conditions of the genitourinary system.

The minimally invasive da Vinci Xi method ensures shorter anesthesia time, lower risk of infection or blood loss, minimal postoperative pain and discomfort, much shorter hospitalization time, and faster recovery and return to normal activities.

From 2007 to date, more than 1,000 robot-assisted urologic procedures have been successfully performed by the HYGEIA Hospital 2nd Urology Clinic, headed by Mr Emmanouel Panagiotou*, urology surgeon and Clinic Director. The procedures were performed to treat conditions of the prostate, urinary bladder and kidneys, many of which were carried out for the first time in Greece.

As noted by Mr Emmanouel Panagiotou, “HYGEIA was one of the first hospitals in Greece to invest in the da Vinci Xi system, a state-of-the-art robotic surgery system that enhances the surgeon’s potential. This innovative technique is applied on the entire range of urologic procedures, with the most common procedure worldwide being robotic radical prostatectomy. It sharpens the surgeon’s skills, while it provides multiple benefits to the patient compared to open or conventional laparoscopic surgery.

*Mr Emmanouel Panagiotou is the only Greek urology surgeon on the Scientific Board (Urology Expert) of the European Robotics Society.
