HYGEIA 1st Surgical Department Accredited as Center of Excellence

07 December 2022

for the surgical repair of abdominal and hiatal hernias

The HYGEIA 1st Surgical Department has been accredited by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), a nonprofit patient safety organization, as a Center of Excellence in Hernia Surgery, for the surgical repair of abdominal and hiatal hernias. In addition, Dr. Periklis Chrysoheris, General Surgeon and Director of the HYGEIA 1st Surgical Department, received the title of “Master Surgeon” for this type of surgery.

During the accreditation process, the SRC reviewed the number and types of hernia and hiatal hernia surgeries performed at the HYGEIA 1st Surgical Department, as well as their treatment outcomes. The onsite inspection was carried out by an expert inspector who documented the numerous parameters and requirements of the standard, such as the experience and training of the surgical team, the application of recognized clinical surgery protocols, the variety of access techniques, depending on the case, and the postoperative follow-up of patients.

The experience of the medical and nursing staff, the technology used as well as the comprehensive patient safety program applied by HYGEIA were additional assessment criteria reviewed for the accreditation. Note that HYGEIA has been holding the Gold Seal of Approval by Joint Commission International (JCI), the leading accreditation worldwide for Quality and Safety standards in healthcare services, since 2010.

Commenting on this accreditation, the Director of the HYGEIA 1st Surgical Department, Mr. Periklis-Iosif Chrysocheris, noted, “Being recognized by an independent international organization for our dedication in providing healthcare services and for our expert know-how and scientific competence in a specific General Surgery field is quite important for us. The surgical treatment of hernias is becoming an increasingly complex surgical process. Laparoscopic, robotic and open techniques are being applied as deemed appropriate, depending on the specific case, but always striving for the best possible outcome for the patient. The best surgical results for such technically demanding procedures arise when they are performed by qualified surgeons with long experience at efficiently organized hospitals. Establishing Centers of Excellence in surgery contributes to better caring for our patients
