HYGEIA: Posterior Retroperitoneal Adrenalectomies Performed Successfully with New Minimally Invasive 3D Technology

26 June 2019

Two posterior retroperitoneal adrenalectomies using the new minimally invasive 3D technology were successfully performed for the first time in Greece at HYGEIA Hospital. The procedures were performed by Professor Dimitrios Linos.

Adrenal tumors are traditionally accessed through the peritoneal cavity, with open surgery, laparoscopically or robotically. The large intestine, liver, spleen and pancreas need to be moved so the surgeon may reach the retroperitoneal space, where the adrenal gland and the corresponding kidney are located.

By using the posterior technique followed at HYGEIA Hospital to access the retroperitoneal space, injuries to the intra-peritoneal organs are avoided, as are any potential adhesions from previous surgeries. Patients do not report any pain postoperatively, and are able to get up and eat just a few hours after surgery, while they are usually discharged on the following day.

As Professor Dimitris Linos, Director of Surgery at HYGEIA Group noted, “The impressive clinical progress of patients after undergoing posterior endoscopic adrenalectomy is complemented by new 3D technology, offered by HYGEIA Group. This new technique gives surgeons 3D vision capabilities, without compromising their tactile skills.”.
