MITERA: Establishment of Health and Sports Medicine Center Exclusively for Women

31 October 2018

A dedicated sports medicine center exclusively for women who wish to work out safely and stay healthy and in shape has been established at MITERA Hospital, a member of HYGEIA Group.

The Women’s Health and Sports Medicine Center caters for professional female athletes; women who jog, swim or exercise in gyms; working women who suffer from neck pain, back pain, arthritis or tendonitis; expectant mothers who wish to exercise safely; and new mothers who want to lose weight and get back in shape. The Center aims to prevent injuries, offer personalized treatment and full rehabilitation to women, and promote health, safe exercise and general wellbeing among women.

The official launch of the Center took place at the N. Louros Conference Center on Wednesday, October 31. As the President of the MITERA Scientific Board, Mr Georgios Kallipolitis noted, “The Women’s Health and Sports Medicine Center does not just cater for professional athletes, but for all women who exercise. An athlete for us is any woman who is or wishes to remain active. The fact that the Center operates within a large and organized hospital such as MITERA, as well as our partnership with many qualified doctors, makes all the women who entrust us with their health feel safe and secure.

On his part, the Director of the MITERA Hospital Women’s Health and Sports Medicine Center, Mr Dimitrios Tsoukas, orthopedic surgeon, noted, “It is a known fact that many injuries and conditions – such as anterior cruciate ligament tear, which is 2-4 times more common among female athletes, shoulder instability, fatigue fractures, chondromalacia patellae as early as childhood, arthritis and fatigue fractures due to osteoporosis and progressive bone mass loss – are more common among women. There are also major medical issues that only concern women: one is exercising during pregnancy and the other is the female athlete triad, which includes osteoporosis, eating disorders, such as anorexia or bulimia, and amenorrhoea. The Center offers effective treatment for all conditions related to sports and chronic injuries, by applying the latest arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques that respect the anatomical features of women.
