Parkinson’s Awareness Event

05 April 2016

World Parkinson’s Day

The HYGEIA Hospital Parkinson’s disease & Movement Disorder Department, assisted by the 2nd Neurological Clinic of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, is organizing a Parkinson’s awareness and information event for patients and carers. The event is held on the occasion of the World Parkinson’s Day and will take place at the N. Louros Conference Center, located within MITERA Hospital, on Saturday April 9, 2016 at 10am.

Entitled “From Science to Patient Care”, the event is open to the general public and is held under the auspices of the International Parkinson’s disease and Movement Disorders Society.

Ms Maria Stamelou, Head of the HYGEIA Parkinson’s disease & Movement Disorder Department and Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Philipps University Marburg, Germany, noted, “Parkinson’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative cause of parkinsonism and the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer’s disease. Our challenge is to offer useful information to the public about what Parkinson’s disease is, how it is currently being treated and what the immediate future holds. We also aspire to transfer the scientific knowledge of the past few years to the everyday lives of the tens of thousands of our fellow citizens in Greece who are suffering from the disease. The event will also focus on the comprehensive management of the disease, which combines pharmaceutical with supportive treatment, such as physiotherapy, speech therapy and psychological support.

Ms Stamelou further added, “Each patient is different and individualized treatment is a must to ensure better quality of life for patients and their families.”
