HYGEIA Hospital Establishes IPEX Athens: International Centre for Advanced Pelvic Oncology and Pelvic Exenteration

08 July 2026

HYGEIA Hospital is pleased to announce the establishment of IPEX Athens (International Pelvic Exenteration Centre), a new specialised Centre for Advanced Pelvic Oncology and Pelvic Exenteration, dedicated to providing comprehensive, highly specialised care for patients with complex and advanced pelvic malignancies.

IPEX Athens is being developed in accordance with the highest international standards and the operational models of leading specialist centres worldwide. The Centre places particular emphasis on multidisciplinary care through dedicated Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs), personalised treatment strategies, high-complexity oncological surgery, and the holistic care and rehabilitation of patients.

Pelvic exenteration is one of the most demanding procedures in modern surgical oncology and is performed in carefully selected patients with locally advanced or recurrent pelvic malignancies, offering, in specific cases, the possibility of curative treatment.

IPEX Athens will operate as a highly specialised centre of excellence, integrating multidisciplinary surgical teams, advanced imaging and oncological assessment capabilities, dedicated anaesthetic and intensive care support, and modern rehabilitation and patient support services. Particular emphasis will also be placed on the systematic collection and evaluation of clinical outcomes, as well as on the development of educational and research activities of international standing.

The International Centre for Advanced Pelvic Oncology and Pelvic Exenteration will actively develop international scientific collaborations, contributing significantly to the advancement of advanced pelvic oncology in Greece and the wider region. Commenting on the establishment of the Centre, Mr Andreas Kartapanis, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of HYGEIA Hospital, stated:“The establishment of IPEX Athens further strengthens HYGEIA’s strategic vision for the development of internationally recognised Centres of Excellence. We continuously invest in highly specialised clinical services that combine medical innovation with scientific excellence, providing patients with access to advanced therapies and comprehensive, high-quality care.”

IPEX Athens is led by Professor Christos Kontovounisios, Director of the 2nd Surgical Department at HYGEIA Hospital, who has extensive international experience in advanced surgical oncology and actively participates in international scientific collaborations and professional networks. Professor Ch. Kontovounisios commented: “The creation of IPEX Athens marks a new era in the management of complex pelvic malignancies. Our goal is to establish an international framework for advanced care that provides access to specialised surgical techniques, multidisciplinary expertise and personalised treatment strategies, delivered according to the highest international standards and always centred around the needs of the patient.”

IPEX Athens aspires to become a reference centre for advanced pelvic oncology both in Greece and internationally, providing access to specialised treatment, modern multidisciplinary care and innovative therapeutic approaches.
